Special mortars are used to bind the refractory materials together in a brick lining and to fill the seams. Mortar consists of the filling material and binding substance. Special mortars bind (SHS process [self-propagating high-temperature synthesis]) bricks together in a brick lining with the ceramic seam, this seam being even stronger than the material of brick.
This contributes to the durability of the brick lining making the lining monolithic, prevents the bricks from falling out of the brick lining and the enclosure of heating or chemical unit from the local hot or overheated spots.
